Does it actually work?
Short answer: yes, remarkably well — and here's exactly how, including the parts where it isn't magic.
What happens when you snap
- You take one photo. Shelves, drawers, the sad vegetable bin — all of it, in one frame or a few.
- The AI reads the fridge. A vision model identifies what it sees: the half bell pepper, the eggs, that block of paneer you forgot about.
- A recipe is written for you. Not fetched from a database — written, around your ingredients, your goals, your diet, your allergies, and your skill level.
What it's great at
Everyday fridges
Thyme shines with normal groceries — it doesn't need a stocked pantry or exotic ingredients to make something good.
Using up odds and ends
Half an onion, some wilting spinach, one lonely tortilla. The stuff you'd throw out is exactly what it's best with.
Meeting you at your level
Tell it you're a beginner and you get fewer pans and clearer steps. Tell it you're confident and it stretches you.
Where it's honest
- It can't see inside opaque containers or the back of the shelf. If the good stuff is hiding, open the drawer and take a second photo.
- Occasionally it misreads an item — a jar of tahini might get called peanut butter. You can fix anything before you cook.
- Recipes are AI-written, so treat them like a confident friend's suggestion: taste as you go. If something's off, refine the recipe with a prompt or edit any step until it's right.
A note on allergies
Set your allergies once, and Thyme will never put those ingredients in a recipe it writes for you. That said, AI isn't a substitute for your own judgment — always double-check labels on packaged foods, and treat severe allergies with the caution they deserve.
